New Comics Waiting Room

I'm ashamed to admit that I didn't intend for my review of JOKER ONE to be posted on Memorial Day when I started reading the book a month ago...but it worked out that way anyway. New Comics Waiting Room is up now with said review from Yours Truly (and a new Anything Goes from Yours Truly's husband). Please read...

Issue 34 of Comics Waiting Room is here! Check out what we’ve got for you this time!

Vince Moore examines ethnic diversity in superhero comics and comes up with some surprising numbers.
http://www.comicswaitingroom.com/vince35.html

Marc Mason asks if we’re better off without “new comic day”.
http://www.comicswaitingroom.com/mason34.html

Matt Maxwell watches STAR TREK and ponders how reboots should handle continuity.
http://www.comicswaitingroom.com/fullbleed42.html

Elliott Serrano brings in guest columnist Variant Girl and her essay “Fangirls: Fact or Fiction?”
http://www.comicswaitingroom.com/ccw28.html

Brandon Jerwa takes a poke at TV executives who prematurely cancel shows and showrunners who can’t tell a story in 22 hours.
http://www.comicswaitingroom.com/jerwa20.html

Jess Blackshear reviews the hot new memoir JOKER ONE.

Plus: an advanced review of the first two issues of CHEW and more!

SDCC Day 1

After a long day at the convention (San Diego Comic-Con), I'm back at the hotel for the night.

Brandon just left to meet up with friends, editors, etc., Orion is currently jumping on the bed, and I'm sitting here editing down some hunky man-photos from "The Middleman" panel that we attended today. Matt Keeslar is quite the eye-candy, if I do say so myself. I know I can say this without Brandon getting jealous, because Natalie Morales holds her own on the show as well. ;)

If you haven't managed to check out "The Middleman" on ABC Family, yes, ABC Family, then you're really missing out.

For realz.

And now, a couple photos from Brandon's web album.

The rest are here.

Brandon's Justice League Unlimited collection

After much hemming and hawing, Brandon has decided to part with his Justice League Unlimited collection.

This 51 figure lot of Justice League Unlimited figures is a perfect way to get your favorite classic characters, and some obscure, hard to find characters as well.  These toys have literally been taken out of the package, set on a shelf, and kept out of harm's way.  While I collected these figures to take them out of the package, they have not been manhandled.  Joints and paint are package fresh; we have a non-smoking home.

The character list is under the cut. )

U.S. and Canada bidders only.  Preferred payment method is paypal.  No personal checks.  Buyer pays USPS shipping & handling of a flat $10 (which will include insurance).

This week's (extremely unique) question is:

Q. Dear Mortal-Named-Jess,

I am an ancient daemon god with an unrelenting crush on an immortal Etruscan princess. The sad thing is I have not the courage to tell her how I really feel. I shop at the local pan-dimensional comic store with her all the time (we always read the new Buffy and BSG: Season Zero issues to each other); we game together on a frequent basis (but I never, ever give her any slack as GM. She gets TPK'd with the rest of them!); and we like many of the same things, including music and mocking many a mortal (but not you-- we really like you). I feel we are obviously compatible. I mean, it's pretty... well... obvious. But I just can't seem to get beyond being "just friends". What is this fear I feel? I had no problem razing Hommlet for kicks a few years back, and I don't usually hesitate about anything, but the idea of giving her any indication of my deep affection makes my wings quiver in terror. Please help!

Cynical Me

JKB: April 8, 2008

This week's questions are:

Q. My teenager is going to be driving soon. Any suggestions on how to stall this from happening until she is 18 and on her own?

Q. I like to think that I'm a reasonably attractive guy. I did a little art modeling in college, and kinda look like Jake Gyllenhaal. I've never had a problem meeting women or dating, but every time I end up in a long-term relationship for more than a year I enter a dry spell. Aren't dry spells supposed to be things you have BETWEEN relationships?

As if lack of sex isn't bad enough, I recently turned 30 (okay, I recently turned 31) and I'm beginning to feel like my appeal as a sexual partner is waning across the board. My metabolism changed so I can't just eat whatever I want, I now have a job that requires me to exhibit some degree of responsibility, and I think this is the year where I finally need to get glasses or contacts.

I am very happy in my current relationship (another geek, 7 years younger than me), but I can't help but wonder if I'm squandering my last best hope of having lots of wild, crazy sex before I become uncool and old(er). And yes, the issue of my unquenched sex drive has been brought up to my girlfriend and she's been understanding... it's just that nothing much has happened to improve things either. Does familiarity always breed monotony, or am I just a boring person in bed once you get to know me better?

and

Q. Regarding my Spawn Comics; BBQ lighting fodder, or should I curse my son with a random find when he is 13 and digging through the garage?

JKB: March 25, 2008

This week's questions are:

Q. My 10-year old son, who loves to read comic books, asked me if he could be a superhero when he grows up. Maybe I should have thought about it first, but my reaction was to tell him 'no, superheroes don't really exist.' He seemed very upset afterwards, but I just want him to be realistic. (I'll admit I now feel like I was telling him there's no Santa Claus.) What would you tell your child?

Q. My little brother took one of my comics and cut it up with some scissors to make some stupid art project. He didn't even ask if he could have it. Now it's ruined forever! I told my mom that I was really mad, but she just blew me off. What do I do so she'll listen?

and

Q. What does it mean when you tell a girl you really like her and she replies 'you're a really good friend?' Does that mean I could be a boy friend, or just a friend? I really, really like her and she knows it.

JKB: February 26, 2008

This week's questions are:

Q. After noticing me check out a couple 'Slave Leia's' at the last con, my girlfriend surprised me by getting herself one of the bikini outfits to wear. Problem is, it just doesn't flatter her very well. Don't get me wrong, I love her and all her proportions, but she's just no Carrie Fisher (circa 1983). How do I break it to her without hurting her feelings?

and

Q. I really like this girl who is totally obsessed with Dr. Who. Problem is that whenever I try to strike up a conversation with her, it always goes back to The Doctor and how much she would love to be his 'companion' like Rose or whoever. I try to relate to her as a fan, but while I do watch the show, I'm just not into it as much as she is. Am I barking up the wrong tree?

This week's question is:

Q. How do you get a gamer to bathe? I have a few WOW enthusiasts on my team at work and they always stink to high heaven from gaming all night and rolling into work in the morning. Please tell me how I can get them to wash themselves and apply deodorant after gaming, and before work, in a creative and non-offensive politically correct fashion (I’m also their lead). It’s starting to cause quite the stir and now the team needs air freshener to deal with the stank.
